Dr. Michael Varner & University of Texas at Arlington Students Travel To Ghana
The Music Department and The Africa Program combined forces this summer to present a “Study-Abroad” experience for UTArlington students! The students spent a large portion of the summer experiencing culture and music in the West African country of Ghana. Students, from a variety of departments, were led by world Music professor Dr. Michael Varner in a wide ranging study of culture, traditions, dance, singing, food, language, and of course, music. Dr. Alusine Jalloh, founding director of The Africa Program, acted as coordinator working with the students and facilitating the diverse cultural opportunities. While in Ghana the students met and studied with Master Musicians and cultural leaders from the “Ga, Ewe, Fante, and Ashante” backgrounds.
Students had the opportunity to travel freely visiting music events, museums, natural parks, and historic sites while they learned the history and culture of this fascinating country.
Many of the students purchased tradition items such as artwork, clothing, or musical instruments. Dr. Varner comments, “this was an extraordinary opportunity for our students to experience culture and music in everyday life…. This experience profoundly affected us all and gave us the opportunity to bring a little bit of Africa back to Texas!”
The Music Department and The Africa Program are both very pleased with the results of this “Study-Abroad” trip and are planning on establishing this as a yearly summer course offering.
