Ed Saindon Named as an Editor of PAS Magazine, Releases New Book

Ed Saindon was recently selected by the Percussive Arts Society to be the vibraphone and jazz editor for PAS' quarterly magazine, Percussive Notes. As editor, Ed will responsible for soliciting and editing articles as well as contributing his own articles for the magazine. The August 2007 issue features his article, "Repertoire and Improvisation for the Mallet Percussionist." If anyone is interested in submitting an article, please contact Ed at edsaindon@comcast.net

In other news, Ed has also recently released a new book, entitled Exploration in Rhythm, Volume1, Rhythmic Phrasing in Improvisation. This is the first book of a series dealing with advanced rhythmic concepts for the improvisor and composer. Rhythmic Phrasing in Improvisation addresses the concept of over-the-bar line phrasing via rhythmic groupings of 8ths, triplets, 16ths and various polyrhythms in 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4.

Exploration in Rhythm, Rhythmic Phrasing in Improvisation will develop and expand the rhythmic palette and vocabulary of the improviser and composer. Working on these concepts, players should begin to “hear” rhythms that “float over the barline” as well as develop the ability to execute phrases over longer periods of time. The end result will be a sonic erasing of the bar line and an enhanced sense of freedom with regard to rhythm and phrasing.
