Position Description: Assistant Director of Bands

The Assistant Director of Bands is a vital member of the Pioneer Bands staff, assisting in the planning and implementation of short and long term objectives; providing musical, drill, and leadership instruction to students; providing administrative support to the operational, and recruiting objectives of the band; developing new programs and initiatives that will enhance the musical experiences of band members; and representing the Band and University to the community through outside endeavors. The Assistant Director of Bands has direct interaction with students from all of the various band programs (marching, pep, concert, jazz, winter guard), and will collaborate with other departments to achieve the band’s and University’s goals.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Curriculum/Instruction:
- Providing musical instruction to band members for all bands as assigned
- Instructing the marching band in learning marching fundamentals and drill
- Work with the Director of Bands to develop, revise, and implement an effective curriculum
- Direct the band(s) at assigned performances
- Other duties as assigned

Administrative:
- Responsible for operations/logistics of the band program
- Work closely with university staff in the recruitment and retention of students
- Maintain the band’s inventory of instruments, equipment, uniforms, and music library
- With Director of Bands, supervise work-study students
- Overseeing the Bands scholarship auditions
- Other duties as assigned

Other: The Assistant Director of Bands also serves as a part of the student life staff, and assists with various events and activities throughout the year.

Requirements/Qualifications: Minimum Bachelors degree in music or music education. A specialty in percussion is preferred. Experience instructing music students in instrumental and marching ensembles. Enthusiastic, adaptable, excellent sense of humor, and willingness to come up with a “plan B” are vital. The Assistant Director of Bands reports to the Director of Bands.

Compensation: This is a full-time, 12 month, exempt staff position. Salary commensurate with experience. Full University benefits. Start Date: August 24th, 2009, possibly sooner!
