MD Magazine Reviews Educational Material, Spotlights Several Vic Firth Endorsees

In their September issue, Modern Drummer magazine picked out some of the must-have educational books and DVDs available. Congratulations to the Vic Firth educators and artists who received mention in this special review!

Check out some of these educational materials for yourself and see what Modern Drummer Magazine is raving about:

Time Awareness for All Musicians
- Peter Erskine
Peter Erskine's latest book explores the inner clock, thinking in subdivisions, tempo, and phrasing, among other important aspects of time. Throughout the book are examples that any musician can use, illuminated by Erskine's commentary and judicious quotes from others.

Drum Set Systems - Matt Patuto
Matt Patuto stresses common-sense fundamentals of drumset performance here, beginning with warm-ups and proper alignment of the limbs. Patuto's "Steady Flow" system of 16th-note and triplet exercises around the kit are excellent for motor-skill development and learning to create melodic fill ideas.

The Code of Funk - David Garibaldi
This multi-media presentation features legendary funk master, David Garibaldi and includes fully transcribed and analyzed charts of eight recent Tower of Power tracks from the super-funky Oakland Zone CD. An advanced, unique, and very useful educational package.

The Rhythm Collector - Alex Acuña
The legendary percussionist shares invaluable insight and experience on grooving on the congas, bongos, timbales, and drumset in many popular latin rhythms.

Jazz Drums - Peter Magadini
An informal survey of jazz styles, skills, form, and handy pointers. Most compelling is when Magadini emphasizes relationships between grooves, as when he uses the same pattern in multiple styles.

Rhythmic Horizons - Gavin Harrison
Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison demonstrates grooving in polyrhythmic odd-meter settings in this excellent package.

Dynamic Drumming 3:Playing with Precision and Power - Chris Coleman
Gospel drummer/educator Chris Coleman demonstrates his flawless chops and effortless groove on several of his challenging funk/fusion compositions, and focuses on invaluable topics like constructing grooves with a bassist and playing with a sampler.
