Composer and Performer, Nathan Daughtrey Joins the Vic Firth Team
Vic Firth is pleased and proud to announce the addition of solo performer and educator Nathan Daughtrey as both an artist and education team member.
Hailed as "one of the leading voices on marimba," Nathan Daughtrey has already achieved much success and acclaim as a solo performer. He frequently appears as soloist and clinician in concert halls and universities throughout the United States. Praised for his "virtuosic facility and extraordinary musical sensitivity," Mr. Daughtrey has appeared as the featured soloist with several ensembles, including the North Carolina Symphony and the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra in Bratislava, Slovakia.
As a proponent of new music, Dr. Daughtrey has premiered several works, including Gillingham's "Gate to Heaven" for marimba and percussion ensemble, McCarthy's "WarHammer" for marimba and CD accompaniment and David J. Long's Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra. He has also made contributions with his own award-winning compositions, such as Episodes for Solo Piano, which won 1st Place in the 2000 Southeastern Composers' League Philip Slates Competition, and percussion ensemble works Limerick Daydreams and Adaptation, which recently won 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, in the 2005 Percussive Arts Society Composition Contest.
As a composer, Nathan has been described as “fresh and imaginative,” (Percussive Notes). His band and percussion works are quickly gaining international recognition with performances at educational institutions of all levels, festivals/contests, and music conferences around the world. Many of his original works and arrangements are becoming standards in the repertoire, including “Limerick Daydreams” for percussion ensemble or symphonic band, “Shock Factor” for percussion quintet, and “Strange Dreams” for clarinet/alto saxophone and marimba.
Mr Daughtrey holds a Bachelor Degree in Music Education (1997), a Master of Music in Percussion Performance (1999) and a Doctor of Musical Arts (2004) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
