Each year, WGI Sport of the Arts recognizes a few individuals who, through much hard work and dedication, have helped to shape, guide and sustain the growth of the competitive indoor percussion activity. This year, Vic Firth is proud to acknowledge two of their own who have been recognized with this great honor - Education Team members Mike Jackson, and Andy Sanders. |

Mike Jackson’s contributions to WGI, both on and off the floor, are unparalleled. Mike has led multiple groups to success across all three classifications in both Scholastic and Independent divisions. In fourteen years of bringing ensembles to the competition, Mike has an unprecedented eighteen medals at the WGI World Championships and Mission Viejo HS, has been a consistent World Class finalist for the past 14 years.
Even more impressive than the number of successful groups Mike has worked with, is the incredible quality of design and performance his teams have exhibited on the floor year after year. Nation-wide, Mike is regarded as one of the indoor percussion trend setters. Mike’s programs have been some of the most memorable, esteemed, and epitomized shows our activity has ever seen. His work as inspired countless designers, arrangers and educators.
In addition to his contribution in performance and design standards, Mike has been an instrumental part of the growth and development indoor percussion has experienced in the last decade. Mike has faithfully served on the WGI Percussion Advisory board since 1996, and has served on the Percussion Steering Committee and the Board of Directors as well. He was one of the visionaries and founders of the Southern California Percussion Alliance, which now boasts over 80 indoor percussion ensembles. Southern California has grown to be a “hot-bed” of creative and performing talent that continues to set new standards at WGI finals each year.

After starting his WGI career as a judge, Andy Sanders went on to serve indoor percussion in a much larger capacity. For the past 10 years, Andy has served as the Percussion Judge Coordinator for Winter Guard International.
Andy has worked tirelessly to expand the WGI Percussion judge roster, organize judge assignments, and attend to the general well being of all those involved in this competitive activity. With roots as a band director, Andy’s emphasis is always on education and how he can continue to make this activity provide the best competitive system possible.
His commitment to provide the participants the very best experience is always top priority and has shown in every minute of his involvement with WGI. His genuine integrity, concern, passion and care for the educational process have made WGI percussion a stronger activity.
Andy currently serves as the Director of Bands in Southaven, Mississippi. Under his direction, the Southaven Band Program has become one of the pre-eminent band programs in the state of Mississippi. Andy has also served as an adjudicator/clinician for concert band, marching band and percussion competitions throughout the United States.
