Known worldwide
as “The Showband of the Southwest,”
the University of Texas Longhorn Band was founded
in 1900 by a chemistry professor who envisioned that
marching bands would one day become an inspiring
addition to the turn of the century football season.
From its humble beginnings of sixteen students
and $150 worth of instruments purchased at Jackson's
Pawn Shop in downtown Austin, the UT Longhorn band
has become recognized as one of the nation's finest
collegiate marching ensembles.
|
Awards and
honors include a prestigious Sudler Trophy
from the John Philip Sousa Foundation as well
as numerous appearances in nationally televised
events such as Presidential Inaugural Parades, NFL
Superbowls and College Bowl games. The
Longhorn Band, the largest organization on the University
of Texas campus, is the backbone of school spirit
on campus.
