The UMass
Drumline is widely recognized
as one of the nation's foremost marching percussion
programs. Since taking the helm in the 1980,
UMASS Minuteman Marching Band Assistant Director and
Marching Percussion Instructor
Thom Hannum has
combined the traditions of hard work and dedication to
produce not only consistently high performing ensembles,
but also an amazing number of alumni that instruct at
the highest levels.
The UMASS drumline rehearses daily under some
of the most recognized percussion names in the business,
including Vic Firth Signature Artist Colin
McNutt (Percussion Caption Head for the
Madison
Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps) and Vic Firth Education
Team member Jeff Hope (Percussion Tech for Madison Scouts).
Over 300 students
experience the excitement of college marching band at
UMass. Under the
leadership of director George N. Parks, Thom Hannum and
Michael Klesch, the Minuteman Band has emerged as one
of the nation's outstanding band programs. They have
performed for Presidential Inaugural Ceremonies in 1981,
1985, and 2001 and in exhibition at the Bands of America
Grand Nationals Competition in 1993, 2001, and 2004.
In 1998, the Minuteman Marching Band received the most
prestigious honor bestowed upon college bands, the Louis
C. Sudler Trophy, which is awarded in recognition of "the
highest of musical standards and innovative marching
routines and ideas, and which has made important contributions
to the advancement of the performance standards of college
marching bands over a period of several years."
