The Vancouver Whitecaps will welcome the Montreal Impact to Major League Soccer as the league kicks off its longest season this year, with the final played Dec. Charles Woodson Jersey. 1. The league announced in November that its 17th season will start March 10, five days earlier than in 2011. Last years final was Nov. 20. With expansion Montreal giving the league 19 teams, MLS is switching to an unbalanced schedule while keeping the regular season at 34 games per team. The Impact will have their first regular-season match on opening day in Vancouver. Montreals first home game will be on March 17 at Olympic Stadium. Toronto FC will start its regular season on March 17 in Seattle against the Sounders. However, Toronto will play its first MLS opponent at Rogers Centre when it hosts the Los Angeles Galaxy in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League matchup. Toronto fans will have to wait until March 24 to see TFC play at BMO Field in a game against the San Jose Earthquakes. Just seven games conflict with FIFA fixture dates, when many star players are away with national teams: Chicago at New England (June 1); Los Angeles at Columbus; Portland at Toronto and Houston at Vancouver (Aug. 15); Portland at Colorado (Sept. 5); Salt Lake at Houston (Sept. 6); and Chivas USA at Seattle (Sept. 8). About 83 per cent of games are on weekends and holidays, and all 323 games will be televised live. A record nine games are scheduled for April 28. Josh Beckett Jersey. That, of course, is helping lead Team USA to a gold medal at the 2011 World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y., from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5. DeVries has spent his entire professional career as a member of the Lions. Jason Bay Jersey. This years contest (4 p.m. ET, VS, CBC) between Team Lidstrom and Team Staal is the first of its kind, with captains Nicklas Lidstrom and Eric Staal choosing sides for the game at RBC Center. The brain child of NHL Vice President of Hockey and Business Development Brendan Shanahan will take center stage, and the optimism is high that it will be a huge success. Tweet While the ”R & D” will draw the focus of many of the Leagues top decision-makers and the attention of much of the assembled media, folks like Jim Nill will be there for the ”O.” Nill, of course, is the assistant general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. And as player personnel is his stock and trade, it is the ”orientation” part of the 2010 NHL Research, Development and Orientation Camp Fueled by G Series that will bring him to the Toronto Maple Leafs practice facility in Etobicoke, Ont., on Aug. 18 and 19. ”I guess there are kind of two sides to this camp,” Nill told NHL.com. ”Were researching new rules and things to make the game better. And you need good players participating to properly do that, and the roster the NHL has put together is all the top kids eligible for this years draft. So its a great scouting opportunity also. Im excited about getting a chance to see these players.” As for the players? They ought to be excited about getting an early chance to make a positive impression upon the men who, just 10 months later, will be deciding whether to use a high draft pick to select them. Judging by the list of attendees — 35 of the top-rated North Americans eligible for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft have accepted invitations — the players are appropriately enthused. ”Were information gatherers — to make decisions, youve got to have information,” Nill said. ”This is another piece of the puzzle. You might see something during these two days that, come Draft Day next June, you might say, I remember seeing this kid do this or that back at that camp.” Edmonton Oilers President of Hockey Operations Kevin Lowe has a unique perspective on the camp that has him anticipating it from three angles. Lowe was a participant in the first NHL Research and Development Camp conducted in Etobicoke in June 2005 and remains a steward of the game, charged with keeping it flowing. Among his many responsibilities with the Oilers, he has input on personnel decisions. He also happens to be the father of Keegan Lowe, a 17-year-old defenseman for Edmonton of the WHL who will be among the top prospects on the ice for the four one-hour scrimmages. ”Im sure some scouts will be coming just to see players,” Lowe said. ”And managers will be doing both — youve got to switch your mind. Youre going to be watching new things, thinking about those connotations and how theyll apply to the NHL game. ”From a fathers perspective? Its just going to be fun.” The presence of his son is one of the differences Lowe cites from his previous experience with the camp. ”We didnt have this the last time around, we used overage guys,” he said of the 2005 camp. ”And as many viewings of a player as you can get are a huge benefit — especially for the managers, who dont get out to see the kids as often as the scouts. This camp will help in that way even moreso than the World Juniors, because nowadays, very few under-18s play in the World Junior touurnament. Jose Reyes Jersey ”So this is big. You get to see players strength and agility. Then, you get to compare it to later in season. Did he get stronger? Bigger?” ”And as many viewings of a player as you can get are a huge benefit — especially for the managers, who dont get out to see the kids as often as the scouts. This camp will help in that way even more so than the World Juniors, because nowadays, very few under-18s play in the World Junior tournament.” — Kevin Lowe The format of the camp provides a unique opportunity for talent evaluators. Limited to 2011 draft-eligible players, the scrimmages will provide a rare chance to compare these players only with one another – no older players or lesser talents to complicate judgments. The introduction of so many new rules will force these players to adapt and think as much as perform, revealing key facets of their games — and theyre going to have to do it all under the watchful eye of scouts, GMs and even media members who could have an impact on their draft position. ”Its great,” Nill said. ”There are going to be new rules thrown in. Theyre used to just going on the ice and playing. Now, new rules. How are they going to respond?” ”It will be good to have them seen in this environment,” Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero said. As NHL VP Hockey and Business Development Brendan Shanahan has pointed out, the camp provides a significant return to the players on their investment of valuable summer vacation time to enable the League to test new ideas. Theyre afforded a chance to make an early impression on scouts and GMs at the beginning of their draft seasons while also getting an advance taste of what NHL life is about. ”The response from NHL general managers has been great,” Shanahan said. ”Were going to have a lot of the biggest decision-makers in hockey at the camp. Part of my intention all along was that this RDO camp also would serve as a great opportunity for the players and managers to see each other up close, both on and off the ice.” According to Nill, whose franchise is renowned for its development model, that opportunity will be just as rewarding for the players as the personnel men. ”Its valuable experience,” Nill said. ”Theyre gathering more information and gathering experience as well. ”Theyre going to be nervous out there. Theyre going to have to react to different situations and different coaches, and thats just whats going to happen their entire career. ”In junior, youre going to be top dog. Then you get drafted and youre just another fish in the water, playing for a new team and a new coach. So this is a learning tool for them too.” Said Lowe: ”Its a kick-off for some of these kids. Theyll be assessed over a whole season. But I think a lot of these players realize that if there are going to be a lot of top players there, theyll want to be best they can and come out on top. ”Most of these kids are pretty well-groomed and educated already at a young age. But there again, if you can show consistency throughout the year, besides the high skill level, thats what the teams are looking for. And this is the beginning of it.” A beginning, Shero believes, that will occur under circumstances that makes sense for everybody involved. ”By having these top draft eligible players, it adds credibility to the process,” Shero said. ”You will see young, hungry players trying their best to impress NHL personnel. With their enthusiasm and skill, it should help with the evaluation of the new rules and ideas that are being tested.” Wholesale Jerseys ’ ’ ’

Tweet A good day at the NHL Entry Draft can set a team up for a Stanley Cup run or two. Colorado Rockies Jersey. A bad one — especially a high pick that doesnt work out — can set a team back for a long time. The first rule of the draft is simple: Most of the players selected never will wear an NHL sweater. The object for general managers is to get maximum value — finding the stars they need to build a team around, the role players to support them and the depth to trade for what they cant draft. Obviously, some teams are better at this than others — and they do it in different ways. The core of Pittsburghs 2009 Stanley Cup-winning team was Marc-Andre Fleury, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, all chosen No. 1 or No. 2 in successive drafts. Chicago built this years Cup-winning team with high picks like Jonathan Toews (No. 3 in 2006) and Patrick Kane (No. 1 in 2007) — but also with lower-round picks such as Dustin Byfuglien (No. 245 in 2003) and Troy Brouwer (No. 214 in 2004). Detroit, perhaps the NHLs most successful team over the past 15 years, also has fared well with a handful of later-round picks — stars such as Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. Heres a look at some of the best drafting performances by NHL general managers over the past quarter-century: Best draft — Detroit Red Wings, 1989 This likely will be the gold standard of drafts for many years — its the one that helped turn the Wings into the elite organization theyve been for the past two decades. Eight of Detroits picks made the NHL and six had significant careers, with four playing 1,000 or more games. Third-round pick Nicklas Lidstrom, a six-time Norris Trophy winner whos still an elite defenseman at age 40, is a lock for the Hall of Fame, as is fourth-rounder Sergei Fedorov, the highest-scoring Russian-born player in NHL history. First-round pick Mike Sillinger and sixth-rounder Dallas Drake (who retired after the Wings won the Cup in 2008) both played over 1,000 games. Second-rounder Bob Boughner played 630 games, and Vladimir Konstantinov, an 11th-round choice, would have played a lot more than 446 were it not for a 1997 auto accident that ended his career prematurely. The Wings 1989 draft class is the only one ever to produce three 200-goal scorers (Sillinger, Lidstrom and Fedorov), and its the first to have two 1,000-point scorers (Lidstrom and Fedorov). Best draft, 21st century — Washington Capitals, 2004 This arguably is the best first-round performance by a GM in recent history. Landing Alex Ovechkin would be enough to make any general manager feel hed had a successful draft. But in 2004, Washingtons George McPhee followed up that gimme (taking Ovi with the No. 1 pick) by nabbing rock-solid defenseman Jeff Schultz at No. 27 pick, then grabbing high-scoring blueliner Mike Green two picks later. Thats quite a haul in the space of one round. McPhee also took Chris Bourque, Sami Lepisto and Andrew Gordon in later rounds, and all of them have seen action in the NHL. 2010 NHL ENTRY DRAFT Granlund more than good alone By Adam Kimelman – NHL.com Staff Writer Coaches love players who make their teammates better, so expect whatever coach gets Mikael Granlund at the 2010 Entry Draft to be very happy. In a seven-year stretch, the Penguins grabbed Sidney Crosby (2005) and Evgeni Malkin (2004), both of whom already have won multiple trophies, as well as Cup-winning goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury (2003), shut-down center Jordan Staal (2006) and rugged defenseman Brooks Orpik (2000). They also picked defenseman Ryan Whitney (2002) and center Colby Armstrong (2001), a solid NHL player who was a key chip in the trade for Marian Hossa that helped get the Penguins to the 2008 Final before winning the Cup a year later. Best one-two punch — Quebec Nordiques, 1989 The Nordiques (now the Colorado Avalanche) were in the second of three consecutive years in which they had the No. 1 pick when they selected Mats Sundin in 1989, and followed that choice by taking defenseman Adam Foote in the second round. No other team has had its first two picks from the same draft combine to play as many games. Most prolific draft — New Jersey Devils, 1990 Having five players make the NHL from any one draft year is an excellent yield. In 1990, the Devils had 10 of their 14 picks make it to the NHL — and all 10 played at least 100 games. Future Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur was taken first, at No. 20, but the Devils also got good value from players like Valeri Zelepukin (11th round), while others like Mike Dunham (third) and Jaroslav Modry (ninth) had significant NHL careers. No team in the last 20 years has had so many players from a single draft reach the NHL. The Devils 1989 draft was nearly as good — eight players, led by 400-goal scorer Bill Guerin (whos still active 21 years later), ultimately made the NHL. Seven for seven — New York Islanders, 1991 and 1993 The Islanders did something right in 1991 — they had one pick in each of the first seven rounds and all seven players made it to the NHL. First-round choice Scott Lachance played more than 800 games and second-rounder Zigmund Palffy had 329 goals and 713 points in 684 games. Six of the seven played more than 100 NHL games. Amazingly, the same thing happened two years later — the Isles had single picks in Rounds 1-7 and saw all seven players make the NHL. Two of them, first-rounder Todd Bertuzzi and second-rounder Bryan McCabe, remain active. (Colorados first seven picks in 1998 all made the NHL, but those choices all came in Rounds 1 and 2). Rolling a six — San Jose Sharks, 2001 The Sharks were a perfect 6-for-6 in the 2001 Entry Draft — every player they drafted has made the NHL. Christian Ehrhoff (fourth round) is a top-four defenseman with Vancouver; Ryane Clowe (sixth) has put up back-to-back 50-point seasons as a solid top-six forward; Marcel Goc (first) is a useful depth forward with Nashville; forwards Tomas Plihal (fourth) and Tom Cavanagh (sixth) both spent some time with San Jose in 2008-09. Freddy Sanchez Jersey. The 21-year-old from Tianjin defeated the Swiss Miss 7-5, 6-1 in the eagerly awaited evening encounter. I am surprised by myself, said Peng, who lost to Hingis 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in their first clash at the US Open last year. Chris Carpenter Jersey. The Canucks have won six in a row and are 11-0-2 in their last 13 as they prepare to host the Calgary Flames at 10 p.m. ET in one of six games on Wednesday nights NHL schedule. Matt Cain Jersey. Liang made the remarks when meeting with Puchong Rattanawan, commanding general of National Defence Studies Institute of Thailand. The two countries also enjoy friendly cooperation in politics, economy, science, technology, culture and other sectors, and maintain sound coordination in major international and regional issues, Liang said. A pitcher who relies on his control, Marcum was out of control at a key moment for the Blue Jays, who lost 8-4 to the wild card-leading Boston Red Sox before a crowd of 40,181 on Friday evening at the Rogers Centre. Marcum (8-6) lasted just 3 2-3 innings, his shortest start of the season not including a rain-delayed game, as the Jays (66-62) fell eight games behind the Red Sox (74-54) in the wild card race, delighting thousands of noisy Boston fans in attendance. ”Thats a tough team to pitch behind and it seemed like I was pitching behind all night,” said Marcum, who had won his past three starts. ”Looking back, it seems like I was never in a pitchers count where I was ahead of them. These are tough guys to pitch behind . It wasnt one of those days where I commanded the ball well.” With his pitch count rising with each pitch out of the zone, Marcum lost the handle in the fourth. After Jason Bay of Trail, B.C., singled, Marcum walked two batters to load the bases. Then, he hit Alex Cora in the back, teeing off a four-run inning that put the Red Sox up 5-2. ”Id rather them swing and hit the ball than give them a free one like that,” Marcum said. If the Jays cant win the final two games of the series, theyll have a mountain to climb the rest of the season if they hope to make a run for the playoffs. They have nine games left this season against the Red Sox. ”You have to win them,” Jays manager Cito Gaston said. ”People are saying we control our own destiny and its true. But youve got to win those games. The weekend is not over. Well see what we can do (Saturday). Hopefully we can pull out a win and give us a shot to take the series.” The loss came despite a rare two-homer game from the Jays as Alex Rios and Lyle Overbay both hit two-run shots. Dustin Pedroia, off Marcum in the first, and Jason Varitek, off reliever Brian Tallet in the sixth, countered for the Red Sox with solo home runs. Meanwhile, Red Sox left-hander Paul Byrd (8-11) gave up four runs in six innings to pick up his fifth win in his past six starts. In a quirky twist, Byrd was making his third consecutive start against the Jays. He beatt the Jays 6-2 while with the Cleveland Indians on Aug. Wholesale NFL Jerseys9 before he was dealt to the Red Sox. His first two outings _ a 4-1 loss last Saturday and Fridays game _ with his new team also came against Toronto. ”Im looking forward to face somebody other than Joe Inglett leading off the game.” Byrd said with a smile. ”Ill be excited that maybe Lyle Overbay wont be in the lineup and recognize everything that comes out of my hand.” After RBIs by Coco Crisp, Jacoby Ellusbury and Pedroia in the fourth, Gaston had seen enough and replaced Marcum with Brian Tallet. While the Jays cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth on Overbays homer, the Red Sox extended the lead to 6-4 on Variteks homer on Tallet and then added two more runs on Shawn Camp in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Newly-acquired Blue Jays infielder Jose Bautista made his debut as a pinch-hitter for designated hitter Matt Stairs in the eighth, grounding out to third base against left-handed reliever Hideki Okajima. Pedroia opened the scoring with a solo shot to left in the first before Rios drove in his fourth and fifth runs in the past two days with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning. Bay, making his first big-league appearance in Canada, went 1-for-4 with a walk. He has hit safely in 17 of his 19 games with the Red Sox, who acquired Bay from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a blockbuster three-team deal on July 31. The loss resulted in the Jays failing to reach a season-high six games over .500 for the fourth time this season. They havent been more than five games over .500 since they finished 2006 at 87-75. Notes: To make room for Bautista on the 25-man roster, the Blue Jays placed spare outfielder Brad Wilkerson (lower back spasms) on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Monday. The Jays acquired Bautista from the Pittsburgh Pirates organization for a player to be named later on Thursday. Bautista, who was playing with triple-A Indianapolis, is slated to make his first start on Saturday at third base . Byrd became the first AL pitcher since the New York Yankees Kevin Brown (March 31-April 14, 2004 against Tampa Bay) to make three consecutive starts against the same team . Toronto had won its past seven home games against Boston. Wholesale Jerseys ’ ’ ’

All of which waas more than enough to occupy the players minds. Im just going to go out and try to put myself in a position to have a chance on the back nine on Sunday. Thats all I can ask for.” Bettencourt collected nine birdies and one bogey for his career-best 64, finishing the near-flawless round with five birdies over his last eight holes. Hitting all 14 fairways, Bettencourt was also accurate again on the Pete Dye Golf Club greens. He needed just 26 putts for the second straight day — and one was an 80-footer he drained for a birdie. ”Hands down it was the best club in the bag today,” Bettencourt alluded to his putter. The cut line fell at one-under 143 with 69 players moving on to the weekend. Wholesale Jerseys ’ ’ ’

CHICAGO – Nine potential buyers who have been preapproved by Major League Baseball have received the financial books on the Chicago Cubs, two people familiar with the process told The Associated Press on Wednesday. Wholesale MLB Jerseys. The books went out Tuesday, with bids due back next month, according to the people who asked not to be identified because the owner, Tribune Co., is trying to keep details of the process confidential. Two sets of books went out. One contains information on the Cubs, Wrigley Field and the regional cable TV network Comcast SportsNet Chicago. The other only concerns Wrigley, which Tribune still hopes to sell separately. No dollar estimates were given for any assets. Interested buyers are believed to include a group headed by John Canning, chairman of private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners LLC; Internet billionaire and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and the family of TD Ameritrade Holding Corp.s founder Joe Ricketts. Sports economists say the expressed interest of several billionaires, among other well-heeled investors, make it a good bet it will exceed the record US$660 million paid for the Boston Red Sox in 2002 by a group headed by billionaire commodities trader John Henry. The Cubs package includes not only Wrigley but Tribunes 25 per cent stake in the Comcast sports channel in Chicago, fuelling widespread speculation the total could reach $1 billion. The EU sports ministers and Olympic committees, holding talks Monday, said sports should not be linked to such a political issue and that previous Olympic boycotts had already shown what limited impact they have. ”Under no circumstance will we support the boycott. We are 100 per cent unanimous,” Patrick Hickey, head of the European Olympic Committees, said in an interview with The Associated Press. ”Not one government leader has called for a boycott. A boycott is only a punishment of the athletes,” Hickey said at the meeting. Slovene Sports Minister Milan Zver, who is chairing a meeting of top EU sports officials from the 27 member states and Olympic committees, said it was no different on the government side. ”I am against a boycott of the Olympic Games in China,” Zver said. The Canadian Olympic Committees CEO echoed that sentiment. ”We would not support a boycott, certainly not at this point in time,” Chris Rudge said Monday in Toronto. ”I cant see any circumstances arising that would have us support a boycott. ”We continue to support the IOCs position that we are a sport organization. We believe the Olympic movement and the presence of an Olympic Games in a country is a force for good and positive change and we believe those things are occurring in China.” The head of the Dutch Olympic Committee believes it is dangerous to mix sport and politics. ”To burden sports with this is the wrong way. It really has to be for the politicians,” Erica Terpstra said. ”There was no call for a boycott whatsoever, even though there is great concern about what happens there,” Terpstra added. ”And I have an additional concern: `keep your hands off my athletes.” Claudia Bokel, head of the athletes commission of the European Olympic Committees, said that standing aside has nothing to do with political disinterest. ”We are very concerned as athletes but we have been working on the qualification for the games for a long time. It is our existence,” said the Olympic team fencing silver medallist. ”We, as athletes, think we should have the time to do our sport and not get involved as a tool for politics. Los Angeles Dodgers Jersey” Russia also came out in support for the Games, arguing the Tibetan situation must not affect Olympics. Only Frances opposition sounded a different voice. The head of Frances second-largest political force, Socialist Party leader Francois Hollande, tried to cash in on a leftist victory in local elections by raising the possibility of a French Olympic boycott to show displeasure over the crackdown in Tibet. ”I dont say this is the solution, but I say we must use all arms and forms of international pressure,” he said on RTL radio Monday morning, after the Sunday elections. On Monday, Tibets governor promised leniency to anti-Chinese protesters who turned themselves in before the end of the day, as troops fanned out to quell sympathy protests that have spread to three neighbouring provinces. The fiercest protests against Chinese rule in almost two decades have embarrassed Chinas communist government and hurt its efforts to have a smooth run-up to the Aug. 8-24 Beijing Olympics. Europe, however, has never questioned the right for the Chinese to stage the Games. Last Friday, a summit of EU leaders criticized Chinas response to demonstrations in Tibet but did not go so far as to threaten a boycott on human rights grounds. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana even said he still intended to go to the Games himself. The national Olympic committees said others should stand up instead of athletes. ”Sports should not carry the burden,” said Togay Bayatli, president of the Turkish Olympic Committee. ”Our countries are doing business there. Everybody is going there,” Bayatli said, adding it was up to businessmen and politicians to take the initiative. Economic relations between the 27-nation EU and China are moving closer all the time. Bilateral trade doubled between 2000-05 and reached US$370 billion (C$259 billion) in 2006. Europe is Chinas largest export market and China is Europes prime source of imports. Zver has argued that political pressure through sport doesnt work, saying the boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games was largely ineffectual at a political level. At the same time, it badly hurt the Olympic movement. ”Sport is tool of dialogue,” Zver said. With files from The Canadian Press. Wholesale Jerseys ’ ’ ’

It was really a special night for Canada at the World Junior Championship on Monday. Indianapolis Colts Andrew Luck Jersey. I was in Salt Lake City and there were a lot of Canadians there, but it wasnt the same as this semifinal in Buffalo. I was in North Dakota and there were a lot of Canadians there, but it wasnt the same either. This may have been one of the most perfect games ever played by a Canadian team at the World Junior Championships; the execution, the decision making, striking that balance between discipline and emotion. I think head coach Dave Cameron was able to get all four lines on his hockey team playing the game the way that they wanted to play it, aggressively taking away the time, space and strength of the American team, which is speed. If you give the Americans open ice, you will be in trouble. On Monday night, every time a white sweater grabbed the puck, there was a red sweater on him. Sometimes it was physical, sometimes it wasnt, but they didnt have open ice, especially in the first period when the tone for this game was set. Canada played virtually perfect in terms of taking away the time and space, being physical, getting stick on stick and doing a really good job of not allowing a very speedy and skilled American team to get going. The Americans wanted a track meet, Canada wanted to put the game on the wall. The game was played on the wall and Canada got the victory. Net Gains In net for the Canadians, Mark Visentin was terrific. This was a goaltender that because he gave up a couple of weak goals when the tournament started, people started to wonder if this was the best Canada has to offer. Mark Visentin is arguably the very best goaltender in the OHL. He has far better numbers than American netminder Jack Campbell, who plays for the Windsor Spitfires. Visentin had the questions coming in because of the shakiness, but right from the start Visentin had no sense of nerves what so ever. He squared up to the shooter, and wasnt overplaying the puck. Campbell is the guy who has won a World Junior Championship in the past. Campbell is the guy who has won back-to-back gold medals at the Under-18s. Visentin has never performed at this level, on this stage. However, Visentin didnt fall off a turnip truck coming down the QEW on the way to Buffalo. He was drafted in the first round by the Phoenix Coyotes. The other part of Visentin game that was magnificent was his puck-handling. He really alleviated a lot of the pressure that Canada faced from the Americans. When they got the puck in the zone, Visentin was terrific, getting that puck around and setting the Canadians on their way for offence. Visentin set up a goal in the game and was nothing but cool, calm, and composed, not only making saves but getting the puck up to his defencemen and forwards to take away any forecheck pressure from the United States. Coming Up Short There are a number of factors why Team USA isnt playing the gold medal game this year. Certainly you give Canada credit because they took the game away from them, but there were other factors at work here too, like psyche. You always wonder how a team is going to react when they are the number one team. It was fair to list them as the number one team, not prohibitive favourites, especially with eight returning players and Jack Campbell in net playing on what was supposed to be home ice. The other factor is the division that they played in. They didnt get very many tough games. Yes, they were pushed by Team Finland, but that wasnt life and death situation. Yes, they got pushed by Switzerland, but that wasnt life or death either. They werent as pressure treated as Canada was and you could see when the rubber hit the road, in an elimination game, when the fans were going crazy and Canada came with its A-Game, the Americans didnt have a response and they simply werent up to the challenge. Jack Cust drove in two runs for the As, who have won two straight after dropping five in a row.MILWAUKEE — Down two points with under a minute left against Milwaukee, the Orlando Magic found themselves in a familiar position. And for the third time in 10 days, the Magic completed a fourth-quarter comeback, beating the Bucks 93-90 on Monday night. Ryan Anderson hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 18.1 seconds remaining after Dwight Howard tipped a rebound to Jameer Nelson, who passed it to Anderson. The shot gave Orlando a 91-90 lead, and for Anderson it was a great ending to a frustrating game. He was hounded at every turn by Bucks forward Ersan Ilyasova and hit only two of six shots before hitting what proved to be the winner. ”I was lucky as it was a wide-open look,” he said. ”You have to give credit to the guys underneath. They fought for it and got it to me.” Howard, who led the Magic with 28 points and 16 rebounds, said he was just trying to get his hand on the ball. ”I couldnt get the rebound so me and (Bucks forward Mike) Dunleavy tipped the ball,” Howard said. ”They left him open at the wrong time. He knocked it down and won us the game.” Howard said it was very difficult for the Magic to come from behind in all three games. ”It is very tough,” Howard said. ”Both teams played hard, but we were just able to close it out. We stayed with it and stayed together and got a good win.” Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy called the win ”unbelievable.” ”For that to happen three times in 10 days and be down in the fourth, its incredible,” he said. ”I dont remember ever having that in a season against anybody when three games sort of go so similarly.” Nelson added 15 points and Hedo Turkoglu had 13 for the Magic. Brandon Jennings led the Bucks with 22 points and Dunleavy added 18. Ilyaosova, coming off a 229-point, 25-rebound effort Sunday against New Jersey, had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Luck Nike Jersey It was the Bucks sixth straight loss at home, the first time Milwaukee has lost six in a row at the Bradley Center since a seven-game slide from Feb. 5-25, 2000. Jennings said the Bucks always seem ”to be a rebound away” from beating the Magic. ”We had to get that loose ball and they got it back and Anderson got a good look,” he said. ”Its really tough. We should have won the first time. We should have beat them in Orlando and we should have won tonight.” Orlando scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to take a 75-70 lead with 10 minutes remaining as Howard scored on a dunk. But the Bucks then went on a 14-4 run to grab a 84-79 lead when Jennings hit a jumper with 4:33 remaining. Jennings had six points during the run. J.J. Reddick hit a jumper from the top of the key to give Orlando an 87-86 lead with 1:38 remaining. Larry Sanders followed with a layup to put the Bucks ahead 88-87 with 1 minute to go. Howard was fouled and hit one of two free throws to tie it with 46 seconds left. Jennings hit a driving layup with 31.2 seconds left to put the Bucks back in front 90-88 before Ryan Anderson hit a three-pointer with 18.1 seconds remaining to put Orlando up 91-90. Nelson was fouled with 10.8 seconds to go and hit both free throws for the final margin. Notes: Magic guard Jason Richardson missed his second straight game with a chest virus. For the Bucks, centre Drew Gooden missed his third straight game with a right wrist sprain and rookie forward Tobias Harris missed his second straight game with a right shoulder contusion.Orlando guard Quentin Richardson left the game in the second quarter after taking a knee to his left thigh. MONTREAL — No one was more surprised than Sean Whyte that he was named the East Division finalist as the CFLs outstanding Canadian. Sandy Koufax Jersey. But the Montreal Alouettes kicker found himself sharing the spotlight Wednesday with quarterback Anthony Calvillo (outstanding player) and injured tackle Josh Bourke (top lineman) as division nominees. ”It was surprising but it feels good,” Whyte said. ”Just to get the nomination was pretty cool. ”Ive never had that happen and didnt expect it my first year, thats for sure.” Montreal acquired Whyte from the B.C. Lions on May 8 for a 2012 first-round draft pick. Given the 2012 draft class is being generally regarded as a very strong one, it was a steep price to pay but the move made it clear the native of Surrey, B.C., would handle the Alouettes kicking and punting duties. And Whyte wasted little time living up to expectations. After missing his first field-goal try of the season, he went on to make a club-record 24 straight before the streak was snapped in a 44-21 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sept. 5. Whyte finished the season hitting 45-of-52 attempts (86.5 per cent) and finishing tied for second in CFL scoring with 197 points. ”Just coming out to help the team as much as possible,” Whyte said regarding what his expectations were this season. ”I know the way I can play and Im always my hardest critic and I think I can always do better. ”Ive had a good season with my field goals, I just think my punting has got to get a little bit better, more consistent, and thatll come with game experience.” Whyte posted a 41.3-yard punting average but his net of 32.5 yards was the second-lowest in the CFL. But the 26-year-old, who signed a contract extension with Montreal shortly after he was acquired, was twice named the leagues special-teams player of the week as well as its top special-teams performer for the month of August. ”Honestly, its the team around me,” Whyte said modestly. ”I know theyve got my back if I miss and theyre always trying to pick me up if Im down. ”Ive got the best snapper and holder in the league, I think, and they strive to be perfect so when theyre perfect it makes my job a lot easier.” Bourke helped anchor a Montreal offensive line that allowed just 34 sacks this season, tied for second-fewest in the CFL. Solid play up front is a big reason why the Alouettes offence boasted the leagues top passer in Calvillo (5,251 yards, 32 TDs), best receiver in Jamel Richardson (112 catches, 1,777 yards, 11 TDs) and leading runner in Brandon Whitaker (1,378 yards, 6.1-yard average). The Alouettes also led the CFL in scoring (28.6 points per game), total yards (403.8 per game), yards passing (309 per game) and fewest interceptions (10). But Montreal heads into its East Division semifinal showdown against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday without Bourke. The 29-year-old native of Windsor, Ont., suffered a season-ending torn pectoral muscle Oct. 30 against the Calgary Stampeders. ”Hes a tremendous player. Since hes been in the league, hes been at left tackle and secured it,” said Alouettes centre Luc Brodeur-Jourdain. ”He has very good technique, good feet; he plays strong and plays well, all effort, for the whole game. I think on our O-line, hes been an anchor. ”Even if theres a speedster out there on the edge, you see Josh covering up and doing his job, and he takes pride in doing that.” Montreal has shifted right tackle Jeff Perrett to the left side to replace Bourke and had Jeraill McCuller step into Perretts regular spot. But Brodeur-Jourdain admits its not the same. ”To be honest, we can only patch,” he said. ”Its tough to replace a guy like Josh Bourke. ”We can do our part but Josh Bourke is Josh Bourke.” Jason Bay Jersey. Both moves were made before the slumping As faced the Baltimore Orioles. To make room for Rosales and Sizemore, the As optioned third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and right-hander Fautino De Los Santos to Sacramento. Also Monday, the Athletics sent left-hander Brett Anderson (3-6) back to Oakland to have his arm examined by team orthopedist Will Workman. Anderson allowed five runs in five innings against Boston on Sunday. In his previous start, he gave up nine earned runs over 5 1-3 innings against the New York Yankees. Manager Bob Geren wouldnt discuss specifics about Andersons arm, or whether he might miss a start. ”Its just an all-around good idea to have him checked out. Nothing real specific,” Geren said. Rosales, who missed all of spring training with a fractured right foot, batted seventh as Oaklands starting third baseman on Monday nigght. Lance Berkman Jersey ”Rosales is a good player, an exciting player,” Geren said. ”He brings a lot of energy to the team and plays a lot of different positions.” Sizemore was acquired from the Detroit Tigers on May 27 for left-hander David Purcey. He hit .222 with 10 walks in 17 games with Detroit. In nine games with Sacramento, Sizemore hit .267 with 12 walks and 11 runs scored. Kouzmanoff was hitting .221 with four home runs and 17 RBIs in 46 games. He also had nine errors. ”I didnt see it coming,” Kouzmanoff said. ”Obviously, as everybody well knows, I started off slow on both sides of the ball, and I did not play to my potential. All I can do is go down and get my work in and get my reps and try to work my way back.” Geren said: ”Kouzmanoff has had a rough start for us both offensively and defensively and he hasnt played up to what he can do. He will go down to triple-A and work on his game.” De Los Santos joined Oakland on Friday in Boston and made his big league debut Saturday. Wholesale Jerseys ’ ’ ’

Mike Conley finished with a game-high 20 points while both Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol scored 14 points as the Grizzlies had a four-game winning streak snapped. Despite the loss, the Grizzlies maintained their three-game lead over the Houston Rockets for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, thanks to Houstons loss to the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday. Memphis led, 43-39, at the half and had a 13-point third quarter advantage erased as the Clippers used a 19-5 run stretching into the fourth quarter to take the lead. Memphis held a 63-50 advantage after a Gasol jumper with 4:01 remaining in the third, but Griffin made 1-of-2 from the line on the Clippers next possession to begin the run. A Conley layup and Gasol free throw gave Memphis a 68-59 lead entering the fourth, but the Clippers scored the first 10 points of the fourth to take the lead. A Randy Foye runner gave LA a 69-68 lead with 7:57 remaining, however, a Greivis Vasquez three-pointer gave the Grizzlies lead back. After trading the lead for the next few possessions, Williams three-pointer with 1:49 remaining tied the game at 79-all. Williams then drove into the lane for a layup and converted on the three-point play. Conleys layup with 29.5 ticks remaining accounted for the final margin, but a double personal foul with 5.7 seconds remaining kept the final seconds interesting. Eric Bledsoe and Tony Allen were called for double personals on a contact play wit, and after a jump ball at center court, the Clippers got the tip to all but securing the victory. Denver, tied with Oklahoma City as the leagues highest scoring team entering play Monday, got the final six points of the second quarter and then started the third on a 10-0 run to take a 64-52 lead, one it would eventually build to 16 later in the quarter. ”Every game we lost teams have come out in the third quarter and hit us in the face,” Lawson said, So he did something about it. Behind Lawsons nine points, the Nuggets outscored the Bulls 27-16 in the period to go up 81-68. The Bulls went nearly five minutes before hitting their first second-half field goal and were just 5 of 16 in the pivotal third quarter. ”That was the best defensive quarter weve had in a long time,” Karl said. ”We kind of caught them in a flat mode. Thats probably the best we played in the second half in a long time. … We kind of wore them down a little bit.” Lawson matched his season with 27 points, Arron Afflalo had 22 and Al Harrington 17 for the Nuggets, scrapping for a playoff spot in the West. Alex Rios Jersey ”If you let them get going they are a hard team to slow down,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. ”That was not our type of game. It was up and down, free and easy. … We never got established defensively.” C.J. Watson scored 17 points and John Lucas III, Carlos Boozer and Kyle Korver added 14 points each for the Bulls. Chicago star Derrick Rose sat out his seventh straight game with a groin injury and the Bulls seemed to be out of sync most of the night, especially on defence. Chicago leads the NBA with 40 wins and has already clinched a playoff spot. The Bulls are 12-5 without the reigning MVP, but they havent played well in last three games without him — twice needing rallies to beat Toronto and then being thoroughly outplayed by the Nuggets. ”We miss him when we win. Come on, its Derrick Rose,” Korver said. ”It wasnt scoring points, though. Weve won a lot of games scoring 91 points or less. We just got to play better defence and we can do that with or without Derrick.” Afflalo, back after being suspended one game for throwing an elbow at Jazz forward Gordon Haywards head on March 23, scored 11 first-quarter points. He had six of those and Harrington had a pair of 3-pointers in a 12-0 run. Chicago got the final six of the period for a two-point lead. Denver was up two at the half. NOTES: The Nuggets are 13-1 this season against Eastern Conference teams. … JaVale McGee replaced Timofey Mozgov in Denvers starting lineup at centre. Coach George Karl saying his team needed to experiment. … F Danilo Gallinari, Denvers scoring leader, missed his fourth straight game with a fractured left thumb. … Bulls G Richard Hamilton, who has played in only 16 games this season, sat again with a shoulder injury. TORONTO — The Manitoba Moose and the Toronto Marlies are two teams heading in opposite directions to close out the 2010-2011 season. Jim Rice Jersey. The Moose are heading to the American Hockey League post-season after clinching a playoff spot with a 3-2 win over the Toronto Marlies on Sunday. Manitobas big guns were firing as Sergei Shirokov, Cody Hodgson and Marco Rosa all scored for the Moose (43-28-7). Eddie Lack was sensational in goal, making 39 saves. With the win, the Moose are now alone in first place in the North Division, two points up on the Hamilton Bulldogs and three up on the Lake Erie Monsters. The struggle for first place may come down to the final weekend when the Moose and Bulldogs hook up for back-to-back games in Hamilton. Joe Colborne and Ryan Hamilton scored for the Marlies (35-31-11). Ben Scrivens stopped 23 shots in front of 7,779 fans at Ricoh Coliseum. The Moose have now gone 6-2-1 in its past nine games as they made its push into the post-season. Its a different story in Toronto, which is now just 1-6-2 in its past nine games. On Feb. 18, the Moose were tied for first place in the North with 64 points. The Marlies were sitting in a three-way tie for second place just three points behind, and their post-season prospects were looking good with 19 of their final 24 games at home. Instead Manitoba has continued to vie for top spot in the division, while Toronto has fallen to fifth place in the division and is all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. ”Its hard to swallow,” said Marlies captain Alex Foster. ”The last handful of games weve been outplaying the other team but we just havent been getting the bounces. Sometimes you get those bounces, and were not really getting them right now.” Ben Scrivens, who started his 15th consecutive game in goal, felt much the same. ”Frustrating is an understatement at this point,” said Scrivens. ”Just a bunch of small mistakes that compounded and we give up three (goals).” The Marlies fall is due in large part to its inability to win at home. Since Feb. 18 the Marlies have gone just 5-8-4 at Ricoh Coliseum with two more left to play and are one of only four teams in the AHL with a losing record at home (15-17-6). With Sundays loss to the Moose, the Marlies havent won at home since a 3-2 shootout victory over the Rockford IceHogs on March 8. ”We all like our home building,” said Foster. ”Its awesome. We try and make it a scary place to play. Its just one of those things. Maybe got too comfortable playing on the road, upsetting teams in their barn. We just couldnt find a way to do that here.” Leading goal scorer Shirokov opened the scoring on a slick give-and-go with Bill Sweatt for his 22nd of the season. Hodgson then made it 2-0 just 32 seconds later when he blasted a one-timer past Scrivens who was making his 15th consecutive start in goal. After the Mooses second goal, Marlies coach Dallas Eakins took a timeout to calm his players down. The strategy worked as Colborne cut the lead to 2-1 less than two minutes later on a pretty passing play from Greg Scott and Simon Gysbers. Rosa restored the Mooses two-goal lead at 6:10 of the third period. But Hamilton answered right back for the Marlies at 7:54, bouncing a wraparound goal off Lacks right skate and in the net. It was Hamiltons sixth goal in his past five games. Hamilton was involved in a scary incident later in the period when he was struck in the face with a slap shot from the point. He quickly went to the dressing room and didnt return to the game. ”There arent many times in a game when I feel any fear,” said Eakins. ”That was one point when I was scared for him. Hes a courageous young man. This guy lays his body on the line every night. He couldve easily just got out of the way and let that shot go through, but he chose to put himself in harms way.” The Moose are off until their big two-game weekend series with the Bulldogs. The Marlies play their final road game of the season Wednesday in Lake Erie against the Monsters, who they lost 2-0 to on Saturday, then wraps up its regular season with back-to-back home games Saturday and Sunday against the Rochester Americans and the Abbotsford Heat. Notes: Lack was recently named to the AHLs all-rookie team … The Marlies and Moose are No. 1 and No. 2 on the penalty in the league … The Moose won the season series with the Marlies 5-3-0. Austin Jackson Jersey. Signed to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training, the North Delta B.What a game! The 41-38 double-overtime shootout between the McMaster Marauders and Laval Rouge et Or was the talk of the town in Vancouver on Friday night. And could you have scripted a more thrilling championship game? Underdog jumps out to big lead. Reigning champ responds. More scoring. Overtime. The Marauders jumped out to a seemingly insurmountable 23-0 lead at the half over the defending champions from Laval. ”Thats what I love about Canadian Football,” said one fan after the game. ”Its not over until its over.” Cliché, but never more true as next thing you knew, the score was 24-23 in the fourth quarter… in favour of Laval! Despite squandering the commanding lead, the Marauders still had plenty of fight left and bounced back to re-take the lead at 31-24. Laval showed their championship mettle though and refused to give up their title without a fight. They respond with an eight-play, 62-yard scoring drive to force overtime. McMaster actually had a chance to win the game in regulation but Marauders kicker Tyler Crapigna pushed a 30-yard attempt wide as the clock expired. The Rouge et Or were able to get the ball out of the end zone and avoid losing by a Rouge. Its a good thing too because that game deserved a better finish. And it got one. The two teams exchanged touchdowns on their first OT possessions before Marauders DB Steven Ventresca picked off a Laval pass on the Rough et Ors second possession. The turnovver gave Crapigna another chance at glory and this time he did not disappoint, connecting on a 20-yard field goal to give the Marauders their first ever Vanier Cup win. Matt Cain Jersey Marauders star quarterback Kyle Quinlan took home MVP honours after an incredible performance. Quinlan threw for 482 yards, the second highest total in Vanier Cup history, and two touchdowns for the win. He also added 14 carries for 106 yards. All in a days work. Quinlan could very well become the next Canadian QB to play in the CFL. Coming into the year he was already on the CFL radar and he threw in front of team scouts at the CFL Evaluation Camp in March. His performance throughout the season and monster game on Friday night should, at the very least, have earned him a legitimate look from the CFL and a shot at cracking a roster as a QB. The game also attracted nearly 25,000 fans. The big turnout definitely added to the atmosphere of the game. After it was over, it was all anyone wanted to talk about around Vancouver at the various Grey Cup festival parties. Well that, and reports that two CFL legends – Joe Kapp and Angelo Mosca, now both in their seventies, apparently got into a scuffle at a CFL Alumni luncheon. But thats another story. The Vaniers success was a real highlight in what has been an exciting Grey Cup week in Vancouver. Friday was a great showcase for Canadian Football and the CIS. Lets hope the Grey Cup on Sunday can be as entertaining. Wholesale Jerseys ’ ’ ’

Could it be the CFL Coach of the Year was only coach for the year? With the league set to announce its Coach of the Year next month, a poll on TSN. Chicago White Sox Jersey.ca has crowned former Saskatchewan Roughriders head man Kent Austin as the runaway winner. Earlier this month, Austin resigned his post in Regina to become the offensive coordinator at his alma mater Ole Miss. Austin garnered 74% of the vote with Winnipegs Doug Berry a distant second at 16%. Wally Buono of the B.C. Lions and Pinball Clemons of the Toronto Argonauts came in with single digits. In his rookie season as head coach, Austin led the Roughriders to their first Grey Cup title in almost 20 years. And the last time the Riders ruled the roost, Austin was the quarterback as Dave Ridgway split the uprights in 1989. While Austins subsequent departure was met with disappointment by many Riders fans, almost 70% of TSN.ca users supported Austins decision to return home and coach at his alma mater. General manager Eric Tillman, also an alumnus of Ole Miss, brought Austin in to replace Danny Barrett prior to the season and overhauled the roster. Austin assembled the parts into a cohesive unit that finished second in the West Division. Then, narrow playoff victories over the Calgary Stampeders and Lions catapulted the Riders into the Grey Cup. With what seemed to be half the province of Saskatchewan at the Rogers Centre, Austin led the Roughriders to the promised land, leading to a heros welcome in Regina. ”To work as hard as we did – for the players to work as hard as they did, for the staff to work as hard as they did – from training camp all the way forward and to culminate it with a championship, that why you play,” Austin said after the Grey Cup victory. Berry had the Blue Bombers leading the East Division for the better part of the season before faltering down the stretch to finish second. But victories over the Montreal Alouettes and Argonauts led to a matchup with the Riders in the Grey Cup. Buono guided the talent-laden Lions to another first-place finish in the West Division but a loss to the Riders in the West Final left Vancouver fans wanting more. And after the Argonauts got off to a slow start, Clemons turned the ship around and managed to capture the East Division regular season title. But the Blue Bombers put a damper on what turned out to be Clemons last game as head coach of the team in the East Final. Andrew Luck Jersey. WINNIPEG — Welcome back. Paul Konerko Jersey. The NHL returned to Winnipeg with a cold reminder of the challenge that lies ahead, but it did little to dampen the warmth brought on by a massive civic celebration. As the clock ticked down on Sundays 5-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, the sold-out crowd at MTS Centre rose to its feet and gave the Jets a standing ovation that was 15 years in the making. ”Thats pretty incredible,” said forward Mark Scheifele, who played his first NHL game. ”In Barrie when wed lose, people would be leaving halfway through the second period. Definitely to hear that, to get a standing ovation when we lose, it just shows that were going to have fans behind us regardless.” Indeed, it appears the honeymoon will last a long time between the fans and a young team that has work to do in order to make good on coach Claude Noels assertion it can qualify for the playoffs. A couple glaring turnovers were costly against the opportunistic Canadiens, who bounced back from a loss in their opening game of the season. Ultimately, the Jets were unable to harness much energy from an amped-up crowd following an emotional pre-game ceremony that included a tribute to Rick Rypien and a loud rendition of O Canada. The players had also endured a long nine-day wait after the end of the exhibition season and as much hype as any of them have ever faced for a regular-season game. ”It was a pretty unique situation,” said captain Andrew Ladd. ”Its still not an excuse and we have to come up with a way better performance than that. But definitely a different situation and something that you know youre not going to have the chance to do this again. ”Its pretty disappointing with the outcome.” Carey Price had a solid game for Montreal with 30 saves while Mike Cammalleri, Tomas Plekanec, Yannick Weber, Travis Moen and Max Pacioretty each scored. The roof was nearly blown off the intimate arena when Nik Antropov scored the first goal for the reincarnated Jets early in the third period. Amid growing tension with Price looking unbeatable, he made it 2-1 by driving hard to the net and shovelling a rebound behind the Habs goaltender with Brett MacLean parked in front. A surge of momentum followed as Winnipeg poured on the pressure in an effort to tie the game, but Weber made it 3-1 while Dustin Byfuglien was serving a questionable interference penalty and the Jets never recovered. ”I thought it was a weak call,” said Byfuglien. ”I have a feeling it kind of (changed the game), but weve still got to go back to work after it happens.” Montreal was a hand-picked opening night opponent for the Jets — ”We thought it would be a terrific matchup,” said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman — but it didnt play the role of gracious guest. Price was particularly sharp and the Habs took advantage of two Johnny Oduya turnovers to build a 2-0 lead. The first ended up on the stick of Cammalleri, who quickly beat Ondrej Pavelec with a nice wrist shot at 3:05 of the first period. Plekanec made it 2-0 at 14:17 of the second period after winning a puck battle with Oduya. ”We gave up some free pizzas in the middle of the ice,” said Noel. ”The first one … thats exactly what good players do. Turnovers result in goals. One chance, and its in the back of your net.” The return of big-league hockey to Winnipeg had fans celebrating in the streets hours before the puck was even dropped. Cars honked their horns while driving downtown streets and strangers high-fived on the sidewalk — many of whom had dug deep in their closet to pull out vintage Jets sweaters. The sold-out crowd inside the 15,004-seat building — the smallest in the league — included Bettman, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and a number of former players from the original Jets. And the atmosphere was raucous from the moment a pre-game video on the scoreboard ended with the words ”Its Time.” It was the kind of scene owner Mark Chipman had long imagined in his dreams while plotting a way to convince the NHL to return. Hes been completely humbled by the response from the community since buying the Atlanta Thrashers on May 31. ”I know how it happened,” Chipman said of the NHLs return. ”I can go back over the past 16 years and I can tell people how it happened, but Im not sure why it happened. Ive had an enormous amount of good things happen to me and Im not sure why that is. I struggle with that one. ”Even when I do pinch myself, it doesnt come to me.” Hes as competitive as any owner in the league and will be expecting better things in the weeks ahead. The Thrashers finished 12th in the Eastern Conference a year ago and all but four players who dressed for the Jets on Sunday were part of that team. Noels challenge will be to get the most out of players like Scheifele, Evander Kane and Alexander Burmistrov — all of whom are under 21 and being counted on to contribute. The Thrashers were also 29th in goals against last season and the team didnt have a great defensive effort in the opener. As for the fans, they appear ready to be patient. Bettman bristled at a question about the long-term viability of the second NHL team to call the city home — ”We have no reason to believe anything other than this team will be a huge success,” he said — while Chipman talked about the spirit of its inhabitants. ”Im glad that people feel so good about this, I really am,” said Chipman. ”It is a great city and it has been for a long time. I think it became an even greater city, to be honest with you, after the NHL left in 96. Rather than sort of wallow in self pity and roll up the sidewalks, I think the community really dug in.” The hockey team must now follow suit. Notes:@ Cammalleri and Jaroslav Spacek each left the game with injuries and didnt return for Montreal … The 50-50 winner took home more than $70,000 … Winnipegs next game comes on Thursday in Chicago … Scheifele played 13:44 in his NHL debut. DORAL, Fla. Ted Williams Jersey. – Tiger Woods has entered the CA Championship at Doral next week, resuming his return from knee surgery on a Blue Monster course where he has won three times. Woods played his first tournament in eight months last week at the Accenture Match Play Championship, where he was eliminated in the second round by Tim Clark of South Africa. This will be Woods first stroke-play event since winning the U.S. Open in a playoff last June. For the second straight World Golf Championship, every eligible player has entered the tournament. The 77-man field at Doral was determined by the top 50 in the world ranking and top players from money lists around the world. Players still can qualify after this week if they move into the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings on the PGA Tour or The Race to Dubai in Europe, or if they are in the top 50 in the world ranking published Monday. Geoff Ogilvy, the Match Play champion for the second time in four years, is the defending champion at Doral. Ogilvy won last year by one shot over Retief Goosen, Jim Furyk and Vijay Singh, with Woods another shot behind. Woods has not finished out of the top 10 in his six appearances at Doral. He won three straight years (2005-07), the last victory when it became a World Golf Championship. ”Tiger returning to the CA Championship for his first stroke-play event since getting injured his absolutely huge for the south Florida community,” tournament director Eddie Carbone said. LOUIS — Tim Connolly finished off the St. Louis Blues after Mike Griers fortunate bounce got the Buffalo Sabres going in the third period. Griers tip-in somehow squirted through for the tying goal early in the third, and Connolly scored the winner on a power play and iced it with a short-handed goal in Buffalos 5-3 victory over the Blues on Sunday night. Grier and Connolly, who each had two goals and an assist. helped the Sabres win for only the third time (3-11-0) this season when trailing after two periods. Jochen Hecht added a goal for the Sabres, down 3-2 after two periods. Tim Kennedy, Jason Pominville and St. Louis product Chris Butler each had two assists as the Sabres rebounded from a shootout loss Saturday against Ottawa. ”We didnt play well (Saturday) night,” Grier said. ”I think we all kind of felt anxious coming into the game tonight and the guys battled. I think it took us a while to find our legs, but we battled and hung in there.” Alex Steen scored twice, and Eric Brewer added a goal for St. Louis. The Blues have dropped two straight after winning three in a row. They fell to 6-12-2 on home ice after losing for only the second time in regulation (12-2-3) when leading after two periods. ”We came out with the mindset of pushing the shot clock and getting pucks to the net, playing in the offensive zone,” Blues coach Andy Murray said. ”They took advantage of their opportunities. … Tough to lose.” Connollys power-play goal gave the Sabres a 4-3 lead 7:22 into the final period. He redirected Butlers feed past Ty Conklin. ”We were able to move the puck and get a wrist shot through,” Connolly said. ”I was able to get a piece of it and fortunately, it went into the net.” Blues defenceman Erik Johnson was off for holding, a penalty Murray didnt seem pleased to give up. ”We took a tough penalty, gave up a power-play goal,” Murray said. ”It went by two guys, a shot from the point. … I have seen the penalty. We need to kill a penalty and we need to score a power play goal, and we didnt.” Connolly iced the game, backhanding home a short-handed goal with 3:14 remaining after getting a feed from Grier. ”Grier beat the guy, spun out and made a great backhand pass to me,” Connolly said. ”I was able to get in there and get a breakk and get it up over (Conklins glove). Fernando Valenzuela Jersey” Buffalos fifth goal came seconds after the Blues Brad Boyes had the tying goal on his stick, but the puck was on him quickly and he missed out on knocking in a rebound. ”It came out quick,” Boyes said. ”Im trying to get what I can on it. I dont know if Im too tight there or what, but (Saturday) night in Minnesota was kind of the same thing. A rebound comes out and it goes right by me. It happens real quick, but somehow, youve got to get something on it.” Grier picked up his second of the game after a redirection of Kennedys pass that Conklin appeared to have covered up. However, the puck somehow squirted through 3:15 into the third period to tie it at 3-3. Conklin said that he put it in himself. ”I went to close my legs to cover the puck and it hit the inside of my knees and just squirted in,” Conklin said. ”Its just a fluky goal. ”I knew exactly where it was. I was looking at it. I just went to close my legs. … That probably wont happen again in two years. It was a fluky goal, but it sets a bad tone for the third period.” Steen opened the scoring for the Blues at 10:12 of the first period. He intercepted Craig Rivets pass along the right boards, skated into the right circle and beat former Blues goalie Patrik Lalime high to the stick side. The Sabres countered and got the tying goal when Hecht skated around the goal and whipped a low shot past Conklin at 15:52 of the first. The Sabres grabbed a 2-1 lead when Grier got a cross-ice feed from Kennedy and beat Conklin 7:47 into the second period. The Blues regained the lead on Brewers 50th career goal, and Steens second of the game. They have shared a common bond through their ascent through the Blue Jays organization, but Shaun Marcum, Dustin McGowan, and Jesse Litsch also use that bond as a support group through their descent in dealing with injuries. Marcum made a successful first start on Saturday against the New York Yankees, where he struck out a pair of batters over two scoreless innings. Speaking about his start against the Yankees on Friday, Marcum had a sense of both anticipation and relief about returning to the hill for Toronto. ”Its something that Ive been waiting for for a long time,” said Marcum. ”Its a chance for me to get back out there and face big-league hitters. (Sports Network) – The New York Islanders will try to post their longest winning streak in nearly a year when they visit the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at Air Canada Centre for the opener of a home-and-home series. Wholesale NHL Jerseys. The Maple Leafs have lost four of their last five games and are 1-2 so far on a four-game homestand that ends tonight. Overall, Toronto is 13-8-4 as the host this season. Toronto was dealt a 3-1 loss Saturday by the rival Montreal Canadiens as Carey Price turned away 32-of-33 shots sent his way by the Leafs. The score was 1-1 after the first period and it remained that way until Raphael Diaz and Lars Eller scored in the third period for Montreal. Matthew Lombardi provided the lone offence for Toronto, while Jonas Gustavsson made 20 saves in defeat. Gustavsson will start again tonight against the Islanders. ”We started the game well and really took the pace to them. But as the game went on, it just kinda became a game of whos gonna make a mistake first,” said Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf. ”We were the ones who broke and well have to move on.” Toronto enters tonight just two points behind Washington for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. The Maple Leafs have missed the postseason in each of the last six springs, marking the longest playoff drought in the franchises lengthy history. The Maple Leafs have won three of four in the series against the Islanders overall and they are 4-0-2 in the last six encounters at Air Canada Centre. The Islanders, who are tied for 12th in the Eastern Conference with just 44 points, have won three straight games and will try to win four in a row for the first time since Feb. 10-15 of last season. New Yorks most recent victory came Saturday against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes, who are one of just two teams below the Islanders in the conference standings. John Tavares scored both goals in New Yorks 2-1 overtime win and the All-Star forward ended the contest with the game-winner at 3:58 of the extra session. Tavares enters tonight riding a 12-game point streak — the longest such streak in the NHL this season — and he has eight goals and 13 assists during the run. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2009 draft is leading New York this season in points with 48. Evgeni Nabokov was excellent in net on Saturday, stopping 32-of-33 shots for the Islanders, who were outshot 15-9 in the opening period and trailed by a 1-0 score after 20 minutes ”Getting through the first period, we could have been down by two or three goals, we didnt play very well,” Islanders head coach Jack Capuano said. ”But we regrouped in the intermission and played well the rest of the game.” The Islanders, who will host Toronto on Tuesday, are 8-10-3 as the road team this season. The Tar Heels just havent figured out how yet. Coach Roy Williams said Tuesday that his teams ”preparation is 100 per cent” to go without Marshall after the pass-first guard had surgery to repair his broken right wrist. Marshalls status remains unclear for the Midwest Regional semifinal Friday night in St. Louis, the coach said. ”Youve got me between a rock and a hard place,” Williams said. ”I cannot give you any answers. Ive given everybody all the answers I can give because Ive said honestly, I do not know.” The left-handed sophomore broke his wrist on a drive in the second half of a win against Creighton on Sunday night in the Tar Heels second NCAA tournament game. Call it the latest bad break for a team that lost its No. 2 ballhandler, Dexter Strickland, to a season-ending knee injury, then played three post-season games without two-time ACC defensive player of the year John Henson after he sprained his left wrist in the conference tournament. ”We didnt come all this way just to lay down,” Henson said. If Marshall cant play against Ohio — and that seems likely the case — one option for top-seeded UNC (31-5) could be Stilman White. The lightly tested freshman has gone from being one of the last players to receive a scholarship to being Marshalls primary backup — to possibly starting in the regional semifinals. ”Stilmans grown a lot. When he first got out there, we were a little scared that he might have an anxiety attack or pass out,” teammate Harrison Barnes said with a laugh. ”He looks more fluid out there and he can kind of push the ball and get up and down.” White — who is stepping away from the program after this semester to begin a two-year church mission — says he turned down scholarship offers from BYU, Utah State and UNC Wilmington and picked North Carolina last year after point guard Larry Drew II abruptly transferred to UCLA. The injury to Strickland, the teams No. 2 ballhandler, pushed him up the depth chart. Now the injury to Marshall could elevate him into an even bigger role. ”Im ready to do whatever the coaching staaff asks me to do,” White said. Andrew Luck Nike Jersey ”I have all the confidence in the world that I can do whatever they ask me to do, and hopefully, Kendall will be ready this weekend. If hes not, the coaches will figure something out.” Another option could be Justin Watts, a versatile 6-foot-5 senior from nearby Durham who averages roughly 7 minutes and has made three starts in four years. ”Stilman has basically had everything thrown at him all year,” Williams said. Watts, he added, ”has had limited portions thrown at him. ”So well throw a few more portions at him and try to get him a tremendous number of repetitions Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday in practice, and see if we can get them up to speed, because our preparation is 100 per cent preparation to play without Kendall.” Marshall has been the Tar Heels most irreplaceable player, leading the fast-paced offence with his see-everything court vision and perfect pitch-ahead passes in transition. He was hurt when he drove to the paint and was knocked to the floor by Creightons Ethan Wragge with 10:56 left. He hit one of two free throws, then left the game briefly before returning and playing about 7 more minutes before leaving for good with 1:54 left. Bluejays coach Greg McDermott later called Williams to say there was no intent to injure Marshall. Marshall had surgery Monday to insert a screw into his wrist, and the next day his father Dennis told The Associated Press in a text message that his son is ”doing much better” and experiencing less pain. He added that his son was improving and had ”slept through the night.” The Dumfries, Va., native is a second-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference pick who has 351 assists in 36 games, the best season total in league history and fourth most in NCAA history. The pass-first point guard is averaging about eight points and 10 assists, though he has stepped up his offence recently and scored in double figures the past six games. He had 18 points and 11 assists in the 87-73 win against the Bluejays, his fifth double-double in that span. ”Ive got to try to come up with a way to replace somebody that is darn hard to replace,” Williams said. Has USA Hockey surpassed Hockey Canada in the way of training innovation? Its certainly up for debate in light of the success our southern neighbours are experiencing in the junior ranks. Freddy Sanchez Jersey. According to the American hockey program, some of its recent successes are directly attributable to a cognitive training program it has instituted at all levels. Appearing as a guest Feb. 14 on TSN Radio 990s Game Points, USA Hockey Under 18 Mens Head Coach and former NHLer Danton Cole was singing the praises of IntelliGym (www.intelligym.com), a program developed by Israeli firm Applied Cognitive Engineering. The former Jets draft pick was on to discuss his career, the return of hockey to Winnipeg and the unique mental training program. ”Its a program thats used an awful lot with flight and flight training, trying to get some deep learning and hard wiring of the brain in certain areas. Guys usually get engaged with the program in the summer before they start with us,” said Cole, a Stanley Cup winner in 1995 with the New Jersey Devils. Essentially, IntelliGym is a six week cognitive training program, whereby players play a series of video games designed to improve players reaction in certain game situations, as well as improve their awareness of their surroundings. ”We look at IntelliGym in a holistic way. Between sports psychology and cognitive learning, we feel theyre definitely underutilized (in training).” Originally developed for fighter pilots and NASA tested, the IntelliGym program is also being used by the NCAAs Air Force Academy Falcons Hockey Team. In addition, the NCAAs Memphis Tigers Basketball Team has also used the cognitive software. Through USA Hockeys strong advocacy of the program, IntelliGym is being recommended to organized minor hockey teams across the United States. But the mental learning tool is just scratching the surface in Canada. To date, Hockey Canada has not instituted the training tool. IntelliGym did confirm to TSN that Concordia Universitys Mens Hockey Team will begin with the program this summer, becoming the first CIS team in the country to do so. Simon Fraser Universitys Womens Hockey Club, a grassroots team playing in a Senior A league in B.C., with aspirations to elevate to a higher league, has also confirmed that they will begin with the program in 2012. ”Were very intrigued by the IntelliGym and our players and coaching staff are very eager to started with the program this summer,” explained Concordia Stingers Hockey Head Coach Kevin Figsby. Cole went on to say that the biggest difference between the AHL and the NHL isnt about player speed or size, its about the pace at which plays are being made, the decision-making requirements, and thats where he believes programs like the IntelliGym can really make a difference. Both the USA Under 17 and Under 18 teams won gold medals back in 2011 at the Four Nations Cup tournaments in Sweden and Russia, respectively. ”If you can improve by five or ten percent and make those decisions a little quicker, and youre right at the edge of playing in the NHL or AHL, it (IntelliGym) is a tool that guys would be crazy not to use,” said Cole, a former draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets.
