This is my first post in the Exchange, and I’d like to recommend a book!
Book: The Talent Code
Author: Daniel Coyle
This is a great book that really de-mystifies practicing and skill building. According to the book, scientists have found that skill is actually a physical structure that gets built in our brains. As we build a skill, the physical structure of our brains changes. Neuro pathways get wrapped in a fatty substance that’s simliar to wrapping a bare electrical cable so that signals from the brain travel faster and stronger to the muscles. It just so happens that the mechanism takes a long time to complete the wrapping, and that’s where the 10,000 hour rule comes in to it. It’s really reinforced some things in the way that I teach percussion and helped me to be more effective.
Check it out!
