Biography Joshua Dekaney is a Part Time Instructor of Percussion at Syracuse University and has played percussion with artists Dave Valentin, Peter Cetera, Kaïssa, Jimmy Haslip, Anwar Robinson, and Aretha Franklin. Originally from Houston, Texas, Dekaney plays music of Americana to Jazz to World Music and can be heard on over twenty recordings. Josh Dekaney has traveled extensively throughout Brazil studying folk and popular music and worked with artists such as Vera Figueiredo, Flavio Pimenta, & Tribores. He has studied Brazilian percussion in São Paulo with Dinho Nascimento and Tatá, as well as studied maracatu with Jorge Martins da Silva and Scott Kettner in New York. Dekaney was a headliner of the Batuka! 2010 International Drum Fest in São Paulo. Josh Dekaney has played with many jam bands in central New York including the Turnip Stampede, Tim Herron Corporation, Grupo Pagán, The Siders, Ashley Cox, and the Ryan Montbleau Band. He also performs with singer/songwriter Jeffery Pepper Rodgers and Wendy Ramsay. Josh Dekaney teaches drumset, Latin percussion, Brazilian percussion and jazz improvisation, he leads Samba Laranja: The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble, and directs the drumline of the SU “Pride of the Orange” marching band. Josh Dekaney has accompanied modern dance artists Jawole Zollar and Maia Claire Garrison and worked with composers Michael Daughtery and Andy Waggoner, as well as animator Heath Hanlin. In addition, Josh Dekaney has performed with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, the Lexington Philharmonic, the Binghamton Philharmonic, and the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Dekaney exclusively plays Paiste cymbals, Evans drumheads, Vic Firth sticks, and Pearl drums and percussion. Dekaney is a voting member of both the Academy Recording Arts & Sciences (Grammy’s) and the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (LARAS).
