Biography Vic Firth Education Team Member – Andrew Szypula Andrew Szypula is a percussionist and current student at Temple University. He is currently pursuing his Master’s of Music Degree in Percussion Performance. Andrew graduated in 2012 from West Chester University of Pennsylvania with dual Bachelor’s of Music Degrees in Music Education and Music Performance. Andrew played with many of the top ensembles at WCU including the Symphony Orchestra, the Wind Ensemble, and the Latin Jazz Ensemble. He has played with professional orchestras in the area including the Reading Symphony, The Brandywine Singers, UPenn Symphony, Lehigh Valley Choral Arts Orchestra, and most recently played in a tour of China with the Philadelphia Camerata Orchestra. He has also performed nationally with Drum Corps International World Class Drum and Bugle Corps including the 2009 silver medalist, Carolina Crown. Andrew has studied with the likes of Alan Abel, Chris Deviney, Ralph Sorrentino, David Nelson, Dr. Chris Hanning, and Dr. Marc Jacoby. Andrew is the Director of Percussion at Downingtown West High School, a position holding the responsibilities of teaching, arranging for, and directing the Downingtown West Marching Band and the Downingtown Indoor Percussion Ensemble. He also instructed the bass drum section at the Raiders Drum and Bugle Corps in 2013, and runs a private studio in West Chester. After completing his master’s degree, Andrew plans to freelance in the Philadelphia area while taking orchestra job auditions.
