Chris Powell was born in Redlands, California on December 22nd, 1977. He was born into an already musical family. His father, Roger Powell, an accomplished guitar and banjo player, started him off with his first drum set at age eleven where Chris honed in his skills with his brother, Leroy Powell, a guitarist and songwriter for bands such as Gene loves Jezebel and currently Shooter Jennings. After a few years of study Chris was asked to join the High school Jazz band while still attending middle school and maintained his studies and the band through Jr. High and finally graduation broadening his knowledge of genres from Jazz through country music.
After High school Chris moved to Santa Cruz for college and to pursue a blues and funk background. He shortly found the band Super Sonic Space Shuttle, a P-funk/Parliament influenced funk trio where he remained for two years recording and touring the west coast. After this project Chris moved to North Hollywood then Orange County to play with Buchanan who shortly after signed with Ultimatum Music touring nationally and recording four records over the next six years.
Since 2007 Chris has recorded on albums with the famed Oakridge Boys, American Idol finalist Brooke White, and recorded records for Brent Cobb, Leroy Powell, Buck cherry, and American Idol finalist Michael Johns. His last venture has been with acclaimed, Grammy winning songwriter Jamey Johnson recording tracks for his second album “That Lonesome Song” which sold 500,000 copies in April of 2009 and the newest release ” The Guitar Song ” which also went gold in 2010. Chris is currently on tour with Jamey Johnson on the road with artists such as Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., Montgomery Gentry, and Kid Rock. Chris continues his musical journey and stays adamant that pushing yourself and taking chances will always return a better player and musician.
