   — Video 9: Instrument Characteristics and Mallet Selection

MALLET SELECTION GUIDE:

The following is a selection of mallets that will provide the student will an expanded variety of sounds on the marimba:

M212
Medium. An all-purpose marimba mallet that works well throughout the full range of the instrument. From the Virtuoso Series features a rubber core wrapped with a wool blend yarn and birch shafts with a unique “slip-resistant” finish for excellent feel and control.
M152
From the Ensemble Series. Crafted with a 1¼” rubber core and a latex covering, the combination of components generates a full-bodied sound and a rich fundamental. Slightly more articulation than a yarn wrapped mallet, but without loosing the fundamental.
M210
Soft. Creates a beautiful singing sound in the low register.
M214
Hard. Produces superb articulation and a projecting sound in the top half of the instrument.
