ARTIST BIO:
Ludwig Afonso was born January 21, 1978 in Havana, Cuba and came to Miami, Florida in 1980. From birth, Ludwig was always surrounded by music. His father is also a drummer and was his first and most influential teacher. When Ludwig was younger, his father would take him to his gigs and sometimes he would sit in. Ludwig never took music seriously, though, until he started the sixth grade.
Ludwig obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Music and Jazz Performance from the University of Miami in May 2002. As a student of the University of Miami, Ludwig was given the chance to play in the school’s top ensembles, performing with Maria Schneider, Tony Mendoza, and Bob Berg.
Since moving to New York, Ludwig has played professionally and recorded with such artists as jazz legend Ira Sullivan, Latin Grammy winner Nestor Torres, Sammy Figueroa, Giovanni Hidalgo, Othello Mollineux, Martin Bejerano, James Genus, John Benitez, Mark Murphy, Hector Martignon and many others. He is currently working on several projects with various musicians in the New York area including Grammy Nominated Sony recording artist Eldar Djangirov. Ludwig has also recorded and toured around the world with Spyro Gyra and has appeared on 2 Grammy Nominated CD's: Sammy Figueroa's "The Magician" and Spyro Gyra's "Wrapped in a Dream."
