Tim Genis attended the Juilliard School
of Music, where he was the recipient of the Saul Goodman
Award for outstanding timpanist, and the Eastman School
of Music. In his freshman year while attending the
Eastman School, he was appointed a position with the
Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. In his sophomore
year in college, Tim won an appointment to the Hong
Kong Philharmonic as the assistant
principal timpanist/percussionist. After performing
two years in this role, he returned to Eastman to finish
his degree.
In 1991, Tim was the associate timpanist
and assistant principal percussionist of the Honolulu
Symphony. Prior to that appointment, he was principal
timpanist with the Philharmonia Virtuosi in New York
and principal timpanist with the Radio City Music Hall
Orchestra. In 1993, he won the appointment as Principal
Percussionist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a
position which he held until winning the timpani position,
a role made vacant with the retirement of Vic Firth
after a 50 year tenure.
Currently head of
the percussion department at Boston University, Tim
also runs the BUTI percussion program at Tanglewood.
Mr. Genis has recorded for Sony, London Decca, and
Philips recording labels and has been a guest performer
with the Vienna Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic. |
