He's been called "One of L.A.'s true oddballs. A merger of Harry Partch and Spike Jones, a musical whiz kid and a hopeless crackpot". Many call him "The funky frame drummer" or "The twisted tabla man." L.A.'s hippest musicians call him to ask if he'd come down and give them a bit of his special sound and energy.

Brad Dutz was born in 1960 in Decatur, Illinois and studied music privately throughout his youth. After high school he studied at the University of North Texas, Berklee College of Music and Milliken University. In 1982 he moved to Los Angeles and immediately began studying with Luis Conte, Taranath Rao and Ron Powell. Many percussionists have influenced BradEmil Richards, Glen Velez, Airto, Nana Vasconcelos and Don Alias, to name a few.

Besides his solo CD's Brad Dutz, Camels, Krin, Railroads and Making Ice, he has performed as a band member on CD's by Otherparts, Thousand Other Names, Sleight of Hand, two with Submedia and one duet CD with John Holmes entitled Duets for Percussion. Brad now has over 180 album credits with such musicians and bands as Rickie Lee Jones, Terrence Trent D'Arby, David Benoit, Scott Henderson, Steve Smith, Uncle Festive, Leo Kottke, Jeff Berlin, Maria Muldaur, the Vinny Golias Large Ensemble, the successful At the Movies series, Kiss, Alanis Morisette and jewel. Brad has performed with an equally dynamic group of artists such as Airto, Maynard Ferguson, Kenny Loggins, Al Green, Lindsey Buckingham, and many more. 1995 saw the release of the video series Have Fun Playing Hand Drums. Interworld, Warner Brothers and Remo selected Brad to do eight tapes for beginning and inter mediate djembe, conga, bongo and group drumming.

Mr. Dutz also keeps busy playing for film and TV studios for such hits as Star Trek:The Next Generation, Voyager-Deep Space Nine, Sisters, E.R., Murder She Wrote, Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, Single Guy, Duck Toles, Beverly Hills 90210, Alien Notion, Pet Cemetery, Little Mermaid and many others. He has also appeared on several radio and TV commercial announcements, playing exotic instruments like the budhran doumbec, bata, tabla and djembe.

In 1996 and 1997 Brad toured thirteen European countries with the drummer Russ McKinnon, performing compositions for hand percussion and drum set.

Brad continues to play live in the L.A. underground avant-garde club scene with his trio or quartet. Currently he continues to freelance in the studios around Los Angeles and travels occasionally to colleges and conventions for concerts and hand drumming clinics, He has recently accepted a part-time faculty position at Cal State Long Beach to teach percussion.
