VIC FIRTH ARTIST
DERRICK McKENZIE

Derrick started drumming at the age of six, banging furiously on the kitchen floor with two of his mum's coathangers, to a beat on the radio. Even at this early age, Derrick knew that drumming was the one thing he really wanted to do.

At the age of ten, Derrick began playing in local reggae bands and by age sixteen, he had saved up enough money to buy his own drum set!

In the late 80's, Derrick joined a jazz funk outfit called Tranzeyance. He eventually joined a band by the name of Candyland and the group was signed to Fiction Records. After Candyland, Derrick went on to play with the pop-rap outfit, Funky Realistic. He also began playing with another rap group, Urban Species.

In 1993, Derrick endured two long auditions for Jamiroquai... and the rest, as they say, is history.
