VIC FIRTH ARTIST:
Born June 8, 1970, in Minneapolis. Studied piano at 5 years old and drums at 9 years old. Did my time in school bands. Studied with Joe Pulice at MacPhail School of the Arts in high school. Desperately followed every Eric Gravatt (Weather Report/McCoy Tyner) performance for 4 years. (This was my idea of music college.) Lived in Los Angeles from 1990-1995. Did sessions and played all kinds of good music. Got married and took his bride to the Sizzler in Barstow for our first anniversary as sort of a joke/token of sweetness and humility.
Moved back to Minneapolis because in California the earth shakes!!!! Co-founded Happy Apple in 1996 with Michael Lewis. Co-founded The Bad Plus in New York City in 2000 with Ethan Iverson and Reid Anderson. Then I had 2 lovely children who think I'm nice and fun—which I am in a hammy, unbalanced sort of way. Then co-founded a bunch of other great bands, including Halloween, Alaska and The Gang Font.
Since becoming an unquestionably professional musician/post-post-post modern artist/father to many of the lost nature spirits/friend to clowns with evil mouths/brother to all the broken-hearted Minnesota North Stars fans, I have toured the world performing music on 6 continents and have recorded and/or performed with lots of famous to semi-famous, non-commercially viable musicians and artists, including Jeff Beck, Tim Berne, Dewey Redman, Hank Roberts, Dead Prez, Boots Riley, Atmosphere, Anthony Cox, Bill Carrothers, Chris Speed, The Mark Morris Dance Group, Jef Lee Johnson, Tchad Blake, Craig Taborn, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Meat Beat Manifesto, Benoit Delbecq, Mason Jennings, Haley Bonar, Greg Norton, Matt Maneri, Tony Platt, Chris Morrissey, Wendy Lewis, Peter Lang, Craig Green, Django Bates, David Torn, Matt Mitchell, Joshua Redman and The H.R. Big Band with Jim Mcneely.bio continued below...
Dave's Vic Firth Implements of Choice:
I have also composed for film (Tom Schroeder's award-winning animated short film "Bike Ride Story" and the feature film "Hohokam") and dance (The Mark Morris Dance Group "Violet Cavern") and I played standards at a hardware store opening in 1996 that had a live barn owl living in it. The Bad Plus composed music for fashion maven Isaac MIzrahi's Bryant Park runway shows for 3 seasons and performed the music live in front of a very fashionable crowd.
I also played a super complex, yet musical song from my own pen on the Conan O'Brien television program with The Bad Plus in March of 2008. He liked us for real. You could tell. I also appeared on CBS This Morning, which is on so early that farmers have to be awakened by a point blank blast from an air horn to watch it. I have also done master classes and clinics from time to time. Please ask me to do more as I enjoy macking.
I have been written up in many newspapers and magazines too. Some people that write for these publications think I have something to offer the world of creative music and yet others hate me so much they think I should be waxing the floors of the sanitarium in "Midnight Express" with my sliced-off tongue. Either way, I'm making the music I want, as I hope you all make what you want to make!!! In March 2010, I had the great pleasure of being honored at the renowned Walker Art Center with a 2-night concert celebration of my bands and music. This was a career highlight for me and I was deeply touched by the turnout and support. It always feels especially amazing to be recognized and appreciated in your hometown, one that I love very much.
